Question:
Looking at a few dvd recorders over the weekend and just cant decide what is value for money and which features are worth more money, so far there are the budget models for around the £100 mark most ive looked up have pretty bad reviews, then it gets a bit complicated and where hubby an i disagree the next lot come in at £150-200 and can vary from hard drive, video inc, video recorder inc and time slip function which i kinda like the idea of but hubby disagrees, what im looking for is justification, is it justified to pay the extra for time slip? and what are the advantages, or if someone has a budget one but reads/burn/plays everything can they recomend or any other recomendations please, hardrive not major factor as can record onto dvdrw and transfer to pc for editing etc.
Any advice please?

Hi
Personally I would recommend one of the Panasonics without an HDD as you don't require that. This brand has consistantly come up with 'best buys' for several years now. Check out Pricerunner and Dealtime for the best deals on say the Panasonic DMR E55 at about £150.
Check out one of the review sites such as
Best of luck, Mark

Funny you should say that but i had been considering that one alongside the dmres10 and learning that both take dvd ram discs also been looking at the sony rdrgx300, just trying to wade through the reviews for all of them

justifying timeslip? sitting down to realise you've missed the first 5 mins of a programme, wait till the end of the programme, watch from the beginning, or just start watching from the beginning, albeit 5 minutes behind in real time?. Sat in the middle of a film/football match, the phone rings, switch the recorder on, have that oh so important chat(or toilet break/new can of lager, glass of wine/trip to corner shop, carry on watching the film/football from where you left off, if you've any adverts you may even catch up by the end! With a new baby timeslip = heaven in a little box!

I was just about to start a new post asking people what they thought of Aldi's offering for this week but this seems a suitable place for it.
Hopefully it can be found here
I am not very clever at these things but it reads to me that if you have recorded something on the hard disc, you can copy it later to a dvd disc. Am I right in my assumption ? It looks a bit pricey to me, but if it does exactly what I think it says on the tin, then I could well be interested. (I'm thinking of the final test as something to revel over for years to come !).
Your views would be appreciated please.

We felt we didnt need the hdd as we can record onto dvdrw and transfer to pc for editing and then burn to dvdr- if we wanted to keep it or just record over once we had watched it, our favourite one at the moment is the sony rdrgx300 which does have the time slip function and the ability to record to both + and - discs, has excellent reviews. There is also the panasonic range again good reviews but the playback on dvd players isnt too compatible from what ive been reading but i suppose that could be solved by burning on pc from the dvd ram onto another format.
Also we had been looking at the we had been looking at the liteon 5026 but there other models, maybe worth a look if hdd is what you want.

Not sure about the Aldi Tevion, if it's manufactured by Mico like the cheap Alba, Goodmans, etc., I have read that they are failure prone...
The DVD-RAM thing has always put me off the Panasonics, you can have problems reading this format on some PC drives.
The LiteOn machines are great value, particularly the LVW-5026
I bought a Philips HDD/DVD recorder for the GuidePlus EPG and it's ability to integrate with a Sky Box (or most other digital boxes). User interface on this machine is a little more complex, but once you find your way round it there are some very advanced features. Plus it's got the timeslip up to 6 hours, which I wouldn't be without. You can do all the things mentioned previously, another handy feature is you can watch something on tv, and then go back and record it after it's finished if you decide you want to keep it.
Justification for paying extra for a HDD recorder? The HDD is great for stuff which you would watch within a few days, or for something on the other side when there's two things on you want to watch. Also great for recording series before dumping onto a single DVD.
For some things, I just edit out the ads on the recorder before dumping it onto the DVD with a simple menu. I do use the PC transfer method as well if I want to put fancy menus on, but doing it directly on the recorder is much, much quicker.

They sure are!
I bought a Mico DVD Recorder from Sainsbury's over a year ago.
It started having intermittent problems after 3 months. These became steadily worse resulting in many recordings being lost.
I contacted Mico directly and was impressed with their service. Someone collected the machine from my home and gave me an identical replacement.
Sadly this 2nd machine began developing similar errors after 2 months and finally refused to work at all. This time Mico Service was none existent. I had no reply to 4 emails over 3 weeks. It's as if there's no one there any more.
I called my local Sainsbury's store and they were fantastic, offering a replacement with a more expensive Philips model at no cost. Sainsbury's were also very impressive in helping me get the original item delivered with my home shopping back in 2004. At the time this was done as a one off special favour to me and involved an employee collecting the DVD from another store, taking to his home, taking it to work the next morning and putting it in the van with my eggs and bacon!
Did anyone else have problems with those Mico DVD Recorders which many people snapped up in 2004 via a posting on MSE ?

Timeslip!!!!! We sat down last night to watch Messiah, kids were up stairs having had their milk and their teeth brushed watching their dvd's. Were under strict instructions that they were to come down say good night and go straight up to bed when they had finished. Three times we had to get up, missing vital bits.
Timeslip is a must.
Needless to say we havent got a recordable dvd player yet, next on the list after I have paid for my new laptop (due in a few days)

Have a look at this thread here:
The Panasonic DMRES10 which is recommended by just about everyone there is £120 (either from Richer Sounds or John Lewis, both top retailers) and it includes DVD-RAM support (so can do timeslip). The only negative is that it doesn't support DVD+R/RW, but personally I don't see why this would be a problem.
