Anyway now the nights are drawing in I want to get both of them a rape alarm that they can put in their handbags and take out with them. I need you recommendations...
Obviously it needs to make one hell of a noise but it also needs to be small enough for them to keep on their person without hastle - if it is too big they will simply leave them at home.
Does anyone know where I can get such a device? I was looking on ebay but i'd really like to know that it's gonna make one hell of a racquet before I but anything...

It doesn't rely on a battery........so no worries about it failing just when it's needed :.
The sound from the alarm is 138 decibels, seriously deafening !
It emits an ultraviolet tracer, invisible to the attacker but the stain can be used by the police for identifying the low life person 8).
The best bit/worst bit is an appalling, pungent, repulsive odour is also emitted . Believe me, when you test it you don't want to get it on your skin. Just smelling the can after it's sprayed will make you want to retch.

Yes, it needs to be small enough to put in their handbags but that is not where it should be when they're walking home. Encourage them to have it in their hand. It's no use at the bottom of a handbag. Getting one with a wrist strap is worth considering - yank the strap out and bingo!
And do get them to test it - the ones that look like a big fat felt tip and you push the top down to set them off need a fair bit of pressure: you need to know this before you use it for real.
I wouldn't recommend that sort: the noise stops when you stop pushing the top down. Just as well as the noise is horrific while it lasts!
With those which are set off by either pushing a switch or yanking a wrist cord out, the noise keeps going until you reset the switch and put the wrist cord back in.
And some of the last type have a torch as well as the alarm. Excellent idea in principle, except that if there's one switch for both alarm and torch, and the setting to switch them both 'off' is in the middle, and it's a fiddly little switch ... you can expect some false alarms!
And the local police may have alarms available for sale at reasonable prices.

Another suggestion for RubberDucky is to find out if there are any local classes in self-defence for women. Ask at the local library, Workers Educational Association, council evening classes, even the police may know.
I went to a single session years ago and found it very useful: especially as someone did try to grab me from behind not long afterwards as I walked home one evening.
I've almost certainly forgotten more than I remember but I don't often go out after dark these days.
There were little tips like jabbing your fingers or keys into their eyes if you can, or bringing your knee up suddenly to get your attacker where it hurts. You make an assessment first, of course, and may decide against any of these, because the key thing is awareness!

I'm never sure whether to carry my keys in my hand or not, in case I drop them or they get ripped out of my hand, so in winter I compromise by having them in my coat pocket and keeping my hand over them in my pocket. Rape alarm is in the other pocket, hand similarly poised. I know you can't run with your hands in your pockets, but there's very few people I'd attempt to outrun these days!

We had self-defence training at work from an ex-cop and his tip was similar but slightly different. He said that if you were approached by someone dodgy NEVER shout help because that's what a mugger/attacker will get off on. Keep as calm as you can, point behind the person and shout POLICE. It's usually enough to catch them off guard and give you chance to turn and run like hell!

They are silver and heart shaped ? with a wrist strap that you pull out to activate , they only cost
Ps the one from "Nile" sounds really quite good .
