Hi everyone,
I want a carpet shampooer, not a steam cleaner.Anyone got any good suggestions and prices, as i dont really know what to compare. :-/
I would like an upright model and not too heavy.

I have a Vax 6135 or something and it shampoos the carpet (with warm water and detergent) and it's quite good. B&Q have them on sales I think.

my local dry cleaners rent out a high powerered carpet cleaner for £50/day
the decent ones cost around £600 in the shops
is it worth seeing if you local rent them out?

You don't have the hassle of finding somewhere to store it after you've finished with it either.

I had one of those big upright Bissell's - the Pro-Heat self propelled thing I think. Bought it off QVC in case I didn't like it and I didn't. It was cumbersome, didn't clean like I would have expected from an upright with rotating brushes and also wasn't very well made. A bit of mine broke almost straightaway, with normal use. They also use a HUGE amount of cleaning fluid. Sent it back and bought a VAX 6151(cylinder one) It's OK but not as good as the old one I used to borrow IMO - maybe time dulls the memory as well as the carpets. I still like the Vax, had to use it this week when 2 yr old TM decided to 'wash' the lipstick he'd put on my sheets, out with nail varnish remover!! Straight through to the (new and very expensive) mattress! Took it all out and cleaned up the stain too.
If you have kids/animals/lots of dirty feet in your house, I would advise buying one. I hate dirty carpets so like to shampoo mine regularly. Otherwise, it would probably work out cheaper to rent as needed.
I got my Vax from Costco - about £140ish instead of £170. This was pre my MSE days so maybe able to source one cheaper elsewhere.
