If you're running the game through , all you need to do to access the command console is press the ` key near the upper-left corner of your keyboard whilst in-game.
For a pre-Steam installation of Half-Life, you'll first need to alter the game's shortcut a little. Under the Start Menu entry Sierra>Half-Life, right-click the Half-Life shortcut and select 'Properties'. In the box labelled 'Target', add -console thus:
"C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe" -console
Then, access the console as described above, and type sv_cheats 1 to enable cheat mode. You'll find a handy list of cheats that you can use .
NB: You have to enter sv_cheats 1 in the console every time you start Half-Life, otherwise the cheats - even those you've entered beforehand - won't work. If you find that to be too much bother, you can instead have the game execute this command every time it launches. In the case of a pre-Steam installation, you just add +sv_cheats 1 after -console thus:
"C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe" -console +sv_cheats 1
In Steam's case, the process is only slightly different; click the Steam tray icon, select 'Play Games', right-click the Half-Life icon and select 'Properties'. Click on 'Launch options' and, in the box that appears, type +sv_cheats 1.
