Question:
Selfexplanatory!
Need a cheapish printer for home. Have seen ludicrously cheap Epson printers for less than £30...what's the catch?
Anyone able to recommend anything? Or a particular supplier?
Answers:
Mine is an all in one printer/scanner/copier - Hewlett Packard PSC 2355
It's very good. It was a gift however so I'm not too sure on price.
The printing is clear and quick, the scanning is fairly good and so is the copying.

The catch is probably the price of the ink refills, if you go with genuine originals rather than cheapo copies that is.
What are you looking to do with it?
Answers:
Print off letters, the odd webpage, maps etc....

I have always had HP's printers which have worked very well but I recently purchased an Epson RX425 all in one Printer, scanner, copier, fax with over 5000dpi. I paid about £89 from PC World online and picked it up from store. The printer is excellent for photo printing and the ink in cheaper than HP ink and comes in four colur replacement cartridges.
I would deffo recommend this printer.

I've got the Epson Stylus C62, which is fine for everyday household stuff, although I use a separate photographic printer (the R300) for photos.
The C62 has now been superceded by the , or there's if you want to spend a bit less.
Cheap compatible inks are readily available for both if you don't want to shell out for originals, although I tend to use originals for reliability/quality reasons myself.

Yes, it can work from the computer just like any other printer - it connects via usb. It's probably not the best if you're doing mostly text, but should be ok. As far as ink is concerned it might be more cost-efficient to use something else, but that's just a guess...

have two epsons - Photo RX600 & R300 running both on compatibles from ebuyer with no problem. There's two different "types" of printers (or so I've been told) one where the print head is part of the ink cartridge (can' work this out but I'm not going to argue) and one where it isn't - in short my epsons don't replace print head and therefore regardless of which cartridge you use eventually the quality will decline - so in short make hay while the sun shines and use compatible cartridges. I've found both printers to produce good quality printouts both text and photos

i have an epson C66, seperate ink cartridges and plenty of cheap 3rd party ink cartridges
means its cheap to run and good results, it doesn't sound like its about to self destruct either, like some printers.

I would recommend going with an Epson. Of all the printers I've had, it's been by far the most reliable and easy to use. My old HP would let you know it had run out of ink by just printing on and on till you had a ruined photo or whatever. My Epson gives you a little warning and tells you what to do.
PC World are doing the Epson R200 for just under £60 [ which is a really good deal. 6 individual ink tanks, so you only have to replace the colour that runs out. Also, it prints directly onto CDs/DVDs with a little tray it comes with so that could be handy as well. I mainly use it for my band's demo CDs and the results look very good.
Proper Epson inks costs about £70 but I got the set of 7 (full set plus extra black) from UKDVDR [ for abpou £5 and they've been fine and have lasted a few months so far.
