Carpet cleaner

Question:
Hi there
Can anyone recommend a good easy to use but economical (cheap!) carpet cleaner.
As a mum with two young kids I invest every few months in the services of a professional carpet cleaning company. Within days I am back to the same old stains on the carpet (spilt milk and juice) and ground in dirt. All this leaves me totally disheartened.
Any feedback on what household machine has helped you with this problem would be very much appreciated.

You could always hire one yourself from HSS Hire shops, nationwide based. Every now and then and do it yourself? Save getting the experts in.

I have a Bissell Proheat upright carpet cleaner. They are around £200, but you might get it cheaper if you shop around. Even at this price it will soon pay for itself if you are paying to have your carpets cleaned every few months. It cleans very well, carpets dry quite quickly, and you can vary the amount of shampoo used for heavy usage areas. I have even found that it cleans well just using water ( I ran out of shampoo, but carpets looked grubby so i just went ahead ). It uses hot water (has built in heater) and is easy to use. A bit on the heavy side.

We've got a bissell too - their smallest model, it doesn't do upholstery, but does a fair job on carpets. No heater so I just use hot water. Bit scary how much dirt comes out of the carpet though! Costs around £99, less if you hunt around (ours was £60).
