Question:
I am wanting to get a bra fitting. I know Marks and spencer use to do it but do they still. I am looking for a national retailer that does it.

M&S still do it

M&S still do it, but I don't rate them.
I've just been shopping for undies for my wedding. The wedding dress has thin shoulder straps and I wasn't sure what sort of bra would be best. The M&S lady measured me by tape measure and said I was a 34D. She went to fetch a recommended bra.
She came back with a 34D padded push up strapless bra. (I still don't understand why I needed padding with biggish boobs ). I put it on and it looked awful. I had a huge "in your face" cleavage, and I didn't feel secure with it. I felt uncomfortable in it because I thought I was going to fall out of it, and the lady told me to stop being so prudish. She said a wedding day was your chance to show off and I shouldn't be ashamed of my body! (What a cheek - I'm not ashamed of my body, I just don't want to flash my bits on my wedding day!)
When she left the cubicle, I leaned forward in the bra and my boobs did fall right out of it. I said it wasn't suitable and she was really offended because I wouldn't buy it.
I also overheard them being matter of fact to a young mother-to-be in the next cubicle struggling to understand maternity bras. She said she was nervous as she'd never been fitted before, and the lady just matter of factly said to her "don't be so silly. We've seen thousands of boobs before. Why are yours any different?". I felt really sorry for her.
After this, I'll never go back to M&S for bra fittings.
I ended up buying from Sadie the Bra Lady, however she only has branches in the North East. A lovely lady took me into a room, and looked at my back and cup size. From that she managed to work out my size and brough a few items in the room for me to look at. I ended up buying a strapless basque as the lady said that would give a smoother line under the wedding dress. It fits lovely, I haven't got the cleavage and I feel comfortable in it.
I've also been to Bravissimo in the past and had excellent service there. I would recommend them too.
I've also recently been to see a local dressmaker as I felt my dress needed a petticoat. She slagged M&S off too, and said there is no way a normal bra would have looked right under the dress I've chosen, so I did the right thing in buying the basque.

I agree that M&S aren't great at bra fittings, but admittedly it has been years since I bothered with them.
Beatties dept store certainly do them, and the local one definitely gets the sizing right for me.
Good luck.

It doesnt say where you are but if your in east anglia go to Chadds in Lowestoft. The underwear department is on the first floor and they are very accurate in their measurings and have lots of bras on sale at various prices.

I did have a great experience with M&S in Kingston milton keynes - it took us 1 1/2 hours to find the right bra. there was no pressure to buy anything and i have to say my male friends at work were stunned!
I also had a great maternity experience with the lovely people in John Lewis CMK - I was too big for M&S maternity bras
But my best ever bra experience was at Debenhams (can't recall where though, wasn't local), I had a real laugh with the assistant, I tried on LOADS of bras and in the end I didn't buy anything but I did go back there after they called me to say that they'd specially ordered in some more bras and didi I want to come in a try them - I went in and got two great fitting bras at a reasonable price - How I envy ANYONE who is B/C cup. Although I am too scared to go under the knife to get mine that small!!

I had a good bra fitting with M&S too, took about 1/2 hour and no obligation to buy, I was really embarrassed about going but they were really nice.

My experience of M&S was also bad. The assistant insisted everyone should have wired bras and didn't listen to what I was saying. I did buy a couple of new bras - in a differnet size to my usual as I foolishly thought she had more experience than me.
Result - big red line under my boobs evey time I wore one, so I threw them out and went back to my usual size.
Most large department stores (House of Fraser, Debenhams etc) have bra fitting advice service - but I believe it's down to the individual assistant. Don't feel pressurised to buy - it can be an expensive and uncomfortable mistake!

Beatties told me if you go back to them with an ill fitting bra that you bought from them (maybe after it's been washed once or twice) that they may exchange or refund it - so it's always worth asking. As you say, at £30 a time, they're not cheap!

i recommend la senza and john lewis. the john lewis lady was sooo helpful when i was pregnant.
at m&s i was told to just get meduim nursing bras (she didnt even look at me with my top off) as they vary too much to find a good size.
i do recommend getting several fittings at different places though, with lots of different bras. different stores will tell you you are different sizes, but keep trying on different bras until you work out what is best for you.

Hi,
I can echo the comments about Debenhams.
I recently went in there for a new bra, and I always get checked if possible. I thought the assistant was very helpful and not pushy - although I did know pretty much what I wanted brand wise. I would agree with comments that it can be down to the assistant, however I never thought M&S were very good at the fitting or choosing, and could almost be rude when trying to help.
Its just a shame the local lingerie shop closed down, they were great.

It can be pretty easy to measure yourself - not sure if I can explain it but I'll have a go
Basically you only need 2 measurements
First - measure around your back (ie where a bra band would rest) - then add 4 to that number
Second - Measure the fullest part of your bust (usually across the nipple)
The first result is the number - the difference between those 2 is cup size
Difference of 1 - A cup
Difference of 2 - B cup
Difference of 3 - C cup etc
So if your first measurement is 32 and your second measurement is 38 you should be a 36B as the 32+4 gives the 36 the 38 -36 gives the B....
Measurements 38 and 44 become 42B
Measurements 34 and 41 become 38C
Go on - give it a try :O)
