Can I haggle a discount at Currys?

Question:
I want to buy a specific laptop from Currys digital in the next two days for £549.99, but I would like to get either some kind of discount, or a freebie thrown in. I remember back in 1995 when buying my first PC for me my dad managed to negotiate a few freebies from PC World.
Has anyone got any advice on how I am best doing this, or if I am wasting my time as they wont give me anything? Any help is appreciated. Apologies if I’ve got the wrong thread.

Used to work for Currys - oh the shame! Lol.
I doubt you'll have much room for negotiation on that sort of price. If they use the same system as they used to then you might get a discount if the Laptop has a G on the corner of the price ticket. G = Green is the best commission with R = Red being the lowest.
Best times are Sundays/Evenings near end of week when its quiet and end of the month/week when targets have to be met.

Thanks for the G / R tip though nikki!

There's no harm in haggling anywhere. Be polite, have a smile on your face and be persistant. Above all don't be embarrassed. What's the worst they could say? No. And then you know where you stand.

yea, I will try saving man. Just wondered whether ppl think I can expect a decent freebie etc from if they've tried in Currys.digital before.

I have never bought anything electrical (washing machine, laptop etc) without at least 10-15 percent off. If you choose a quiet time (Mondays seem to be best for some reason) they seem more amenable and faster to shift stock! The least you should be able to get off is 10% in any large store. I'm a really bad haggler as I get embarrassed but if I ask for a discount and they refuse I simply tell them I will buy ALL future purchses in (insert nearest rival) and that I love new technology and change everything regularly. This has worked in 95% of all cases . I bought a laptop in currys ,which was up for £1300, for £1100 and got a free leather antler case worth £79.99 thrown in too! This part may be a little politically incorrect but I like to make them feel as though they are doing a huge favour for a blonde female who's not the sharpest knife in the drawer and thinks they are fantastic. Well worth pushing a little.

Hi joshtbh,
My partner and I have just bought a new tv, we spent a whole day looking at the high street retailers and then at home on the net, fortunately we knew which one we wanted so didn't have to waste more time... Currys was one of the first places we went to... I have worked in retail and I used to be a mystery shopper, we hung around for ages and it then end gave up and had to ask for some service! We told him that we'd decided which tv we were after and had the money to pay and take it away today... So, he knew we were serious about making a deal and he wasn't negotiating for nothing... It was clear that he did have some flexibility... but obviously it would be costing him out of his commision... if you take the insurance then they will usually do a better deal... but we didn't want it... his first offer was an extra £130 free credit to spend in the store... the differenece here was it was a bigger sale, (retail price £1800)... But I think you should def get SOMETHING... If he doesn't budge go to leave, you need to make him think you don't have to buy from him and will go elsewhere... my biggest tip (which worked of us) hang around near the doorway as if something has caught your eye so that he has time to panic and may come after you... this did work for us and was about 2 weeks ago! If all else fails try another Curry's... if it doesn't work in another store you know thier hands really are tied!
The fact that you are paying with vouchers makes no difference at all... it means the same to him as cash or credit card, the only time a payment method would come in is if you were taking a finanace plan and then they'd get more commision again... let the Sales assistant know you're not intertested in finance but dont tell them about the vouchers cos that kinda gives you away from having to buy from them...
Have a look on the net and see if you can get something that compares but a bit better, again showing them you don;t have to buy from them...
Hope this all helps you & good luck!!!

I managed to haggle more than £100 off a fridge and washing machine last year and also got free delivery (worth £40) as I saw exactly the same things online cheaper. It was a Sunday afternoon now I think about it. I guess it all depends on whether you can find exactly the same product cheaper elsewhere or not in order to strengthen your bargaining position. Obviously, don't mention your vouchers beforehand!

take the insurance/warranty, but only if they offer to drop the price and give you a discount. Then cancel the insurance in the 14 day cooling off period for a refund.

my flatmate made the mistake in taking me along to buy his laptop. he wanted to go in, choose one and buy one. the sales assistant tried to palm him off with the display model. my flatmate was quite happy with this but i wasn't, so i haggled for a laptop case (he got to choose whichever one he wanted so he went for the most expensive one) and although i did push for a discount we didn't get it.... so what i'm trying to say, is haggle for extras! laptop cases are a good freebie for them if they get a £500 laptop sold

I'd be wary of this approach as I tried it when purchasing a TV from Currys a number of years ago. On returning to get the refund on the insurance/warranty they sussed me and advised the discount would have to come off the deal too!

Or take it on Easipay ( 10 Direct Debits and £10 deposit ) then cancel the direct debit with your bank.

thanks for the online codes but I can only buy on the high street. Dont worry about that just take the online quote including the discount into Currys and show them. They will honour it so there you are....

The R/G notation does not make any difference. It is an old commision sytem hat was dropped years ago.
xnikkix. Why are you ashamed of working for Currys? I have spent nearly eight years there, and compared to the positively mediaeval attitude of some employers, they are a dream. I love my job, and the guys I work with. The training is pretty good, and the wages do me fine.
Just because it is a big company doesn't mean it is soulless
