Any good haggles lately??

Question:
Hi all,
Do any of you haggle at shops to get a better price? Am scared to haggle in case the shop assistant embarrasses me in front of other customers. Anyone tried and succeeded at haggling before?
I was thinking maybe we should start a thread on what you have haggled on at the shops and what discount you got.
It might give courage to people like me to start haggling.
Sorry if there is a thread about this elsewhere. if so could someone please point me in the right direction.
If not please post your successes or not below. Thanks

I was booking a hotel room recently and afer checking out the online booking agencies I called the hotel and asked if they could give me a better deal. After asking twice they lowered the price from £67.50 a night to £60 for a double b&b at a 4* hotel. Thought this was great until three days later this promotional price was advertised in the national dailies.
It was worth the try though. If you can do it once then you can do it again with conviction.

You can often deal with gym memberships at many 'chain' gyms. If they do not give you a discount then make sure they give your a free month or goody bag with water bottle etc...
My family has always got discounts with large electrical items at Currys/PC World (for fridges, microwaves, hoovers, washingmahcines, computers etc...).
It is not worth haggling at super markets or the types of shop where you take a good off the shelf and take it to the till (Toys R Us etc...). Haggle in shops where you are being sold something personally by a sales assistant (car showrooms, currys, jessopsl, smaller retailers etc...).
I recently got a £1000 subwoofer system for my car for £600 by looking around in a store and just telling the shop keeper straight up that everything is alot cheaper on the internet and can only buy from him if he can sort me out with a good price!

I have been trying this with David Lloyd for 6 weeks now and they aren't budging. They won't give me anything free either. Someone told me to hang on and after 4 or 5 weeks, the offers start rolling in. Where am I going wrong. I have even told them I will be joining at another local gym as they are £800 a year cheaper but all they do is keep phoning me up.

What a fab thread and just in time.....Can any one help me???
Today we're buying a new digital camera from Jessops to the value of £250 and also wedding rings from Earnest Jones (Possibly engagement ring too) up to £875. We were burgled and these are vouchers given to us by our insurance company.
I've never haggled in my life but I really fancy a go but can I still haggle using vouchers and what's the best thing to say???
Answers:
do it all the time saved £1500 on new car.
Answers:
Don't say you've got vouchers, haggle works mostly on basis you can go elsewhere.
Pick items you want, let sales talk the talk, then simply say, ' so what sort of deal can you do me on this lot?'
Even on camera maybe ask what can you throw in with it?
I try not to pay sticker for anything non essential.

I've never haggled in my life but I really fancy a go but can I still haggle using vouchers and what's the best thing to say??? Never, never , never show the vouchers, before the deal is done. When we see insurance vouchers in the shop I work in, we see it as money in the bank. You know the customer cannot go anywhere else. Work out beforehand what you will need to complete the set i.e., when you buy the camera ask for the accessories. The more unusual the accesory, the more chance you have of getting it, since the shop is often happy to unload it. The classic example is a tripod.
SHops such as Currys have standard customer offers. Ask what is available.
Also, have a very good idea of what you want, and if you are prepared to take slight seconds, there are further discounts. Bear in mind with a camera, the small scracth will not affect its workings. One thing with cameras. Be very wary of buying one that doesn't have its accesories (leads, driver software, battery etc)

I have got vouchers for john lewis. have had them for ages but never want to buy anything at john lewis cos if you do a search you can always find the same thing cheaper elsewhere.
I was recently reading Martin's money diet book which said that john lewis had this "never knowingly undersold policy". they do have that policy for instore cos i checked on the internet. Yeah right. most of their stuff is at least 10% more than other places.

I was thinking of buying a high chair for my kid. there was one being sold on the john lewis website at £120. not sure if it would be the same price in store. checked out argos which had the same high chair for £99.
so much for the john lewis policy.
anyway since i have these vouchers was thinking of checking in store but if the price is £120, not sure if I should pay for it then go to CS or ask for the price reduction before hand.
Anyone tried this at john lewis before? would be interested in knowing how you got on.

Remember the John Lewis "Never knowingly undersold" Policy doesn't apply online and only in store and the item has got to be exactly the same make and model and colour for you to qualify for the undersale reduction.
