Question:
I have recently decided (as part of my newly responsible financial outlook) that I need to write a will. How do I go about doing this and how much should I expect it to cost?
If anyone can think of more appropriate board for this thread I would be grateful, I have looked but can't seem to find a home for it.
Thanks.
Answers:
Various different places do will writing, from banks to tesco (they have a pack you can buy to do your own), there are also DIY books on the subject that are very helpful. It really depends on how compllicated the will is going to be, personally I like the traditional route of going to see a solicitor. Fees will vary depending on where you go but I think around £75 (plus VAT) is the going rate.

Thanks for that. I suppose that I'm not really qualified to judge how "complicated" my will would need to be... I'll go and see a solicitor and let them sort it out.
Much appreciated.

We did the solicitor route. Didn't realise how much was involved. Glad didn't do it ourselves.

June 2006 is make a will month. some solicitors firms have joined a scheme, whereby for every will they draw up in june, they will donate between £50.00 to £100.00 to charity. I believe St Annes hospice (newport) and st Lukes hospice ( harrow, middlesex) are just two of the charities which will benefit. you can find details on the hospice websites. I think solicitors usually charge around £80.00 + VAT for a will.

Any idea how I can find out which solicitors are taking part in this scheme please??

''During the month of June this year, St Luke's is holding " Make a Will month" in partnership with several local solicitors. In order to encourage as many of our supporters as possible to think about making a will, the firms participating in the scheme will be making a donation back to the hospice for every will which they prepare.Further details to follow but meanwhile if you would like to hear more, please contact Amanda Ziegler on tel 020 8382 8022''.

Wow, a wealth of information (only wealth I'm likely to see in a while LOL)...
Thank you all so much. Looks like a solicitor is the best bet then, I'll look at the hospice websites and take it from there... I don't qualify for legal aid but I figure that this is one of those things where instead of asking myself "Can you afford to do this?", I should be asking "Can you afford not to?"

forgot to mention that you may be entitled to legal aid for the making of a will. solicitors can make a will under the legal help, advice and assistance scheme. however to qualify you must be on benefits (income support etc) or low income and also be:
-70 or over; and/or
-disabled; and/or
-a parent of a disabled person and wish to provide for that person in the will; and/or
-a single parent who wishes to appoint a guardian in your will.
