fun door stops

Question:
I am moving into a 3 storey house in a couple of months. These houses are fitted with fire doors. I want to buy or make some fun door stops. I know they sell them in John Lewis but they are £15 each. I have looked on ebay but as they are heavy even if they are a few pounds the cost to post is as much again.
Any suggestions. To make them out of fabric you just need to fill them with stones or wheat i think
thanks
Louise

Great post! We too have moved into a 3 storey house and have exactly the same problem. I look forward to reading your replies.

I've made some out of fabric, & used rice or pulses to fill them. Friends try to steal them all the time. Just make sure you don't get them wet or they may start sprouting!!!
However, have to say (in sensible mode) firedoors are there for a reason.

i know there is safety aspect but when you have cat that needs to get about the house i may need them.
what are the grains you can get in the hot microwave pouches that you use for muscle aches , can you use dried peas.

Louise I used butterbeans & lentils, just because I had them, no other reason, anything wd do. I'm not certain but think the microwave things sometimes have wheat in them.

I could get some nice fabric and make them myself. perhaps simple shapes like a cube. I have heard somewhere that you could put lavendar in them so they work as a room freshener.

I'll move this thread over to the 'In my home' board, as requested by Louise.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see ) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email .

we use old ceramic bottles - cider or beer bottles are good, not glass though

what do you do with the bottles. do you fill them with stones or something heavy

No, they're pretty heavy as they are. They're about 15-20cm tall and thick - solid. Maybe they're earthenware. They're generally brown and beige in colour.
We also use old interesting bricks, but they are more difficult to push out of the way with your foot and more painful if you stub your toe on them.
My mother also made some really interesting pots which we used. This is all in my father's house, so we're on the lookout for more for our new house.
BTW - what are the regulations for fire doors? We have 4 floors and doors int he basement and the ground floor. We have old wooden doors - not autoshutting fire doors...
