I wanna buy a gaming laptop- TECHIE PEOPLE HELP!!

Question:
Well actually I don't, I'm saving every penny, but b/f needs a new gaming laptop as desktop is in process of dying slowly!!
I don't know much about pc's, but he wants something fast enough to run MMORPGs like everquest2 and WoW and stuff.
Any techies got top cheap reccomendations? I almost fell off my chair after custoomising the new Dell at 2k, which is what he wants.. anything cheaper do the job???

A laptop for gaming?
Gaming is more graphics performance than cpu performance, unfortunalty the graphics chips available in laptops are limited and if you want a chip that is capable of playing modern games then you will pay through the nose for it.
Personaly I wouldnt buy a laptop for gaming, becasue it is dificult to upgrade anything other than storage and memory on a laptop and I am pretty certain that there are no laptops that allow the upgrade of a graphics chip. with a normall desktop pc you can pick and chose the grahpics card spend £300+ on a single card or buy 2 and go SLi for maximum performance again the 2nd card could be a future upgrade. Everything can be custom in a custom pc so the 2k you were going to spend on the Dell laptop you could get a desktop of higher spec for alot less or spend the same money and get an amazing pc.
I built a £3000 pc for a mate that won the lottery a few months ago It is outstanding but he doesnt really use the power it has. Infact he asked me if I wanted to buy it but I turned him down.
Do some research, find a few local smaller retailers that will build the pc to your spec or ask people you know are in the IT game nearly anyone can build a pc from components. if you live near bolton/manchester let me know I will try to help you as much as I can

Little John,
thanks for the answer. Wish I lived near Bolton so you could help upgrade my own desktop, it's behaving very oddly at the moment! Sure it'sdue to my fluctuating voltage..
However because of space and needing to travel with it, it's got to be a laptop for b/f :-(
So I guess it's gonna cost him a fortune then? There go my earrings...

Hello Emmzi

I'll move your thread over to the 'Techie Stuff' board, where it should get more views and responses.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see ) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. well if he's set on a gaming laptop, then alienware is a good bet
I'd recommend the
as future proof as a lappy gets (last that bit longer before you have to drop it in a bin), and about as fast as a laptop gets these days.
oh, and it's kinda pretty

Hi Emmzi

I know that Alienware specialise in gaming notebooks / laptops so that might be a good place to look - infact I think they are the best place to look for a gaming laptop. I think they are on the expensive side but they do the job very well.

If you're looking for a gaming machine then you really should consider a desktop pc which will be easier and less expensive to upgrade in the future, laptop's are great in many ways but they're not ideal for upto date gaming.

I totally agree that for modern games and "always upgradable graphics" then a PC is best, but if a laptop is needed here and not a desktop PC, there are options available. You can buy plenty of laptops that will play games with decent graphics, and will obviously be portable and save space.

Are you sure your bf wants a laptop now and not a desktop Emmzi?

Thanks guys. I will have a look. and by the sound of it get him on overtime.
Ooh.. alien come with a free t shirt, lol. However I am sure a discount code would be better...

Ailienware is proberbly the only place you will be able to customise a laptop with highend graphics but they are very expensive £2500+ for somthing decent for gaming that will be good for a few years
I was thinking you could get decent pc for gaming at home in a smallish sized case, nice flat screen and also buy a reasonable laptop for use on the road for less than £2500 but the laptop wouldnt really be capable of playing the games

Alienware do look pretty though
I was having a look at alienware and dell on ebay. But the cheaper ones are coming from Hong Kong (although saying Halifax) and the seller seems to be listing them under several different IDs, so I am sure there is something fishy going on. Seems unlikely to be a genuine deal for £22 :-)

hah hah, b/f has died at prices
Ok guys, let's have you reccomedations. It's to play
- everquest 2
- doom
- half life 2
- SW knights of old republic
and doesn't need anything else much other than IE and a wireless card
Cheers!

does it have to be a laptop??
cos he could build a desktop system for considerably less.
you say his current is dying slowly, by which I presume you mean the comp itself, so if the monitor is still good he coulb put together a new system for between 2 & 3 hundred quid (one that could easily handle everquest etc)
Answers:
Sorry, yes, meant desktop. He's not getting laptop, however pretty they are, or we will be having major ructions!
An off the shelf would be best so he can have a 1yr g'tee or similar, and so he isn;t messing about with spanners for all eternity....
Answers:
oops, and monitor is only 4 months old, as are speakers, so ok for all that stuff

Off the shelf are great but they are sometimes let down buy using a lower performance part that can cancel out the factt your paying a premium for a high spec graphics card, like a !!!!e power supply or mother board that they can use for the case and the whole range that they sell.
My advice would be to set a budget, then go to the local computer shops and aske them for the spec and component details of a PC to fit the budget, Go to PCworld, dell ect and give them the same option ok dell you will need to do it yourself and see what you can get. if you post your budget on here I am sure some of us can come up with somthing for you to look at just to give you an idea of what is available.
Doing this will give you an idea of how good or bad some of the deals are. buying from Pcworld may be dificult to not buy a monitor most of the packages include a monitor.

somebody posted earlier, specs are pretty good for the price , and has a full year warranty.
I'd flog the card on ebay and buy a better one is all (but it would do), other than that it's good to go
