Question:
Hi all. Does anyone have any personal experience with washer dryers? My washing machine broke down yesterday and it's vital that I order a new one as soon as I can.
I've opted for a washer dryer as we live in flats and it's hard to dry clothes and we don't have the room for a seperate dryer.
If anyone has any tips/experience I'd be most grateful.
I need to order by friday, the latest.
Thanks in advance.

We had a washer/dryer when we first got married, 13 years ago. I didn't like mine, never worked too well.
Separate machines are much better IMHO.

Miele topped the list when "Which" did a review of the washer dryers recently. They are certainly less reliabale than seperate washers and dryers. Miele is pricey but solidly built and very reliable.

I had a washer drier, which I have just replaced with seperates. The trouble with washer driers is they only have a very small drum (mine would only take 4.5 pounds of washing which is a pair of jeans and a couple of small bits). In my honest opinion it wasnt worth having because of that and also because of the amount of electricity they use. Can you not get a small tumble drier and get those brackets so you can stand it on top of your washing machine?
Try your local freecyle group, you never know what someone might be getting rid of

Thank you both for replying.
Space is a big issue here at the moment, and we would also need an outlet for the dryer, whereas, some combos we've seen have a condensation tank or something like that.
I am steering more towards washing machine only at the moment, though. Gotta order, and fast. Will have another look around tomorrow.
Thanks again.

I have a washer/dryer , as like yourself , I haven't got room for seperates.
I've had Hotpoint and Hoover models and they repeatedly broke down , but my latest is a Bosch and so far , touch wood! , it's going strong!

Hi there. How long have you had the Bosch model for?

I think it's about a year and a half now
I understand what people are saying about getting seperates and if I had the room I probably would get them too , but some of us just don't have the space

I would personally go for seperates. I too am limited in space so I have a condenser dryer in a cupboard . The thing about washer/dryers, like its been said is they are small and so you can't get much done at once. If you are on your own its not too bad but like me you have a baby ( who looks gorgeous by the way) I personally need to put on the washing machine 2/3 times a day to keep on top of it all .

My two daughters both have washer-driers and have both said they would never have another. They are different makes, but neither of them use the drier part as they say it creases the clothes very badly, whereas I use a separate tumble drier and hardly ever have to iron anything (maybe it's just cos I'm lazy, lol) but I find if I take everything out as soon as it stops tumbling, it's crease-free.

We have just replaced our old washer dryer with a new one also due to lack of space. This one is a hotpoint aquarius super silent. i know they're not as efficient as seperates but this is much better than my old one. It has auto function so stops when stuff is dry and takes a 5kg load. It's A rated for energy efficiency. I put it on to wash and automatically dry after 11pm when leccy is cheaper. Shop around for it cos I got it cheaper in a local shop than it was in Argos or curries. Worth paying a little bit more for one that dries well and takes a decent load.
Hope this helps

Sorry - bit late for your deadline. Had Hotpoint and Hoover washer / dryers for a number of years and ... nothing but trouble.
Bought a Zanussi 1600 spin speed 18 months ago (space a premium) and it's a dream. No problems at all. Doesn't crease (provided you don't overdry - that's nothing to do with separates or not?) and the drum size is very adequate.
But shop around (Pricerunner etc). Got this £200 cheaper than the lowest Internet quote, from Comet of all places. As they and Currys were having a bit of a loss-leader battle at the time.

Hi Charlene
We had a Hotpoint WD for 2 years and I never had any trouble at all - it was perfect and as we had room for only 1 appliance at the time, it did the trick.
I found the key was only drying about half of what you washed...a bit of a pain but 1 relatively full wash load was really 2 drying loads. Sometimes I would turn it on overnight to wash and dry one load but the stuff was always creased when I did that. You just need to use smaller loads for the drying cycle.
I have gone back to 2 seperate machines now that we have more room and I still find sometimes my dried stuff is creased but it is usually my own fault for leaving it on too long too hot or over filling.
And as an aside - I love Ilyana Vanzant, you have reminded me to go have a re read of one of her books I have :O)

Thanks so much for the replies. I haven't bought one yet, it's a bit of a nightmare to be honest, but I'm off now to look for prices for the ones mentioned.
Thanks again!

Charlene,
There's 178 of them here!! Should be sorted on price - but you can change that to 'popularity' etc, as you wish.
Worth giving yourself a headache ploughing through them - as one that fits your requirements may be considerably cheaper from a reputable 'net company.
The list should purely be washer / dryers - but that does depend on the companies applying the right codes for the search engine to pick them up? So a little caution when checking them?

Hotpoint wd640 in graphite!! I hope it's a good buy.
Thanks once again everyone
