Have just had to get my first set of specs
got the eye test free from dolland & aitchinson vocher on the freebies board,
then got a pair of oakley frames on e-bay for £40 worth rrp £180
then took frames to specsavers (lenses for pc work and anti reflective ) £69
specsavers are very good as they will not sell you something you dont really need.
My father had the same opion of specsavers
hope this is of some help

I have had no end of trouble with Specsavers, although I agree with lee634's statement that they don't push you into buying anything. I have used Specsavers twice (I don't know what possessed me to go back the second time!) and both times I had concerns about the quality of the service. I have very bad eyesight and have to spend a lot of money on glasses. On both occasions I have bought glasses from them they have got the fitting wrong so I ended up with terrible headaches because I wasn't looking through the correct bit of the glass.
I have used Boots before and thought the eye test was very professional and thorough. The sales people are quite pushy, but they do have good BOGOFs during the summer.
I am looking for new glasses at the moment so I will be following this thread with interest!

I've just ordered a pair from glassesdirect.co.uk . Virtually identical to my current pair which cost (from specsavers) one hundred and eighty three pounds - but cost me fifteen pounds from glassesdirect.co.uk. No, I am not making this up, and I only wish I had known about these things sooner.
I've had good experiences with specsavers - I stick with them for my eye tests. I know them, they know me, and although it is not a very MSE attitude, I'd rather spend eighteen pounds to go somewhere I feel comfortable than to print out a voucher for a free eye test. There was no pressure on me to buy. I was given my prescription and that was that.
