Advice pls...Is this too good to be true?

Question:
hi guys,
In need of some advice pls.
I was at the vitality show a few weeks ago in glasgow, i filled in something,(don't remember wht,was filling in stuff all day), well i got a call today saying that i won a holiday to tenerife for 4 in a 4 star hotel, she said" i bet ur wondering what the castch is? Well we are NOT a timeshare company, but we sell holidays in europe,(forgot if it was holidays or holiday homes) we would like to invite you up to Glen eagles to listen to a talk, you are not obliged to buy or sign anything, just listen and pick up your holiday pack!"
What do you think?
I am waiting for her to send out all the details tommorrow.
Is is too good to be true?
Answers:
yes, many hours of hard sell

I agree with browntoa, it sounds like they are going to try to sell you something. Do you have the name of the company? You could do a google search to see if it shows anything or post it on MSE to see if anyone here has heard of it.

Hi Malima, a work colleague got a very similar call a couple of months ago after he filled in a street survey. He's quite canny and found it very difficult to believe. I just can't remember what the catch was so when he's back at work on Monday, I'll ask him if he remembers which company it was and why he didn't take it up (hey, if you can wait that long!).

Hi OP. I 'won' one of these years ago, and we had to go miles away for 'only' a 2 hour chat. Talk about hard selling, we were asigned a tanned highly made-up female who was so OTT I wanted to lamp her. We said that we just wanted our winnings but no, they practically chased us out of the building waving some sort of time-share thingy at us. We got info for the holiday, and it would have cost us more than a normal holiday if we'd have taken up their offer, with flights, transfers etc. So we binned it!
Good luck!!!

Aha, that may have been the same reason as WorkColleague may have given it the elbow. Of course at first we thought he was mad for turning it down, but I think it was to do with how much 'small print' fees you had to pay out.

Many years ago before we were wiser about timeshare, i sat in on a time share pitch. When they wheeled in the"hard sell" man i asked him some rather searching questions,at which point he became aggressive.I walked out,as this kind of thing doesnt bother me,but my then OH didnt feel able to.I realise for some people this kind of sell can be very difficult for some people to extract themselves from without signing something and i would be very warey

I would steer well clear. If they don't manage to sell you something you will find that all "the extras" which you will have to pay for your "free" holiday will be more expensive than if you booked it yourself!

Thank you very much everyone for letting me know, i sort of had an idea, but i really needed someone to tell me "don't go", i remember the girl on the phone saying "there's nothing to sign", but i am an easily tempted person,so i'll just not go, i will let you know the name of the company once i get the details.
THANK YOU!!

I agree with all the comments on these 'promotions'. However, the one time we did go along (it was at a hotel in Malta when we were on holiday there), our kids had a great time in the pool and leisure facilities!
It all depends on how you react to 'hard sell'! If you are worried about being tempted, don't go anywhere near them. They'll suss you out and won't let go.
If, like me, you enjoy the cut-and-thrust (and you have the time), it can be a real fun experience winding them up!

You will regret it if you do!
Find out the name and google it, that should tell you what you need to know.

Stay well away
My friend did this aswell and she said they were really pushy and quite agressive.....stay well clear. This all seems to be the same advice.

It will be a hard sell thing and getting them to actually give you the free holiday will be very dificult. I have know people spend 4 hours in one of these places on holiday to get discount/free tickets they are very common in Orlando giving disney tickets away. they were a family of 5, a daults and 3 kids between 10 and 16, they try the sell on you for a short time but really sell the thing to your kids and get then to pester you about it making you look mean and nasty. there are much better things to spend 4 hours dong while on holiday but when you consider that 5 disney hopper passes can set you back well over £1200 it was time well spent for them and yes the got the tickets and didnt sing up for anything.
They lure you in and get you so worked up that when you do say your leaving and they have failed to sell you anything you usually forget about the freeby you went for and you really do loose out then. sometime they give them most of the time they dont and you have to spend money to get it.
If it is local and you have nothing to do for a few hours and can resist all the stuff they try to sell you it could be a laugh you never know you could get a free holiday proberbly not though
Everything you sign should have a cooling off period should you sign up for anything. I also won a free holiday but I had to travel to Preston to collect it, unfortunatly I was working the day I should have gone what a shame
Answers:
If you sign up in another country surely the law may be different, and there may be no cooling off period. Also i think you only get a cooling off period, dependant on where you sign in ie at home versus their office,in this country.

My freind won one and she accepted it, a week in a luxury villa in malaga. She went with her partner & son
For the hardsell bit she goes PAH, do you think we can afford, it the only holidays we ever take is these freebies, weve had loads, mind you the spec of blah blah co was well better etc .. Sat and heckled through the presentation till they threw her out. In her words, job done.
