Hey Just born,
Which version r u in. The reason y I ask u this is depending on the version, go thru the BW documentation. TABW10, 20, 30 etc. Read it throughly. Once you do that, u will still not understand fully. Why, because, you need to think why has SAP done this. Once you go into this thinking, then, you'll see the answer.
Happy reading
Cheers

Transfer rule: Rules by which data is transferred from R/3 into a master data object or PSA for transaction data. Usually it is raw data in the as-is condition from R/3, if there are no routines in the transfer rules to massage the data, as it comes in.
It goes through the communication structure to the gateway of the InfoCube where it encounters update rules for transformation and update of data into the InfoCube.

Looks like people dont read properly or read but not think why. I'll give you some info:
Transfer Rule: When you create/activate the transfer rule, a replica also is stored in the R/3 sys. This will help in metadata tfr and easy data load into BW. You can create rules here also which is the first step.
You can have multiple tfr rules into one comm stru.
Tfr stru is there for Master Data InfoObjects (Attr, Text and Hierarchies) and for Tran. Data.
Update Rules: Basically for Data Targets. It is between Comm Stru and Data Targets. You may want to have diff rules for diff data targets though the underlying comm stru is the same.
The above diff are not exhaustive though.
Hope this will help you

How does your metadata go into BW??
What happens when you change the data type/length or any business rule on a particular field in R/3. How do you transfer the same into BW??
Are there any other ways to tfr metadata
KRK
I found the very first answer very clear while a little bit synthetic.
All the following answers just made it more and more confusing, so why don't we just stop here and tell our guest that he can find more informations about that in any BW documentation ?

Before you have any transfer rules in the system, the meta data is transferred by 'Replicating metadata', which creates a replica (of the datasource) in BW. Then transfer rules are generated based on the metadata, when you 'assign' the source system to the replica.

After you replicate the datasources and create tfr rules and then there is a change in the data type and length in the R/3 sys, does the sys not prompt to replicate the datasources in the BW. then where do you go to replicate. have you seen that you can replicate the datasources by right clicking on the tfr stru and then clien "replicate datasources"
cheers
You do it from the context menu of the Source System node (which is, I agree, when expanded, becomes the Trfr structure) in the InfoSource tree, or, from the DataSource node in the Source System tree.
It is not a chicken or egg question
